The Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology (IHEI) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established in 1923, first as the Sevan fishery station, then in 1936 as the Sevan Hydrobiological Station and since 1991 as an Institute of NAS. The Institute conducts hydroecological research in the lakes, rivers and reservoirs of Armenia. There are three thematic research divisions: hydroecology, hydrobiology and ichthyology.

The scope of activities of the Center includes:

  • Studies of hydro and terrestrial ecosystems of Armenia – biodiversity, taxonomy, morphology, ecology, ethology, evolution, genetics and zoogeography of invertebrate and vertebrate animals
  • Studies of parasitic fauna of animals
  • Assessment of bioresources, and development of conservation methods, restoration and sustainable use
  • Scientific education, marketing development, innovation and commercialization of scientific specializations

IHEI conducts research on Lake Sevan hydrobiology and the protection of natural resources, and assesses the watershed impacts on the lake.

The Institute has a multi-year databank on hydrological, hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological data on Lake Sevan and its basin rivers.

The Institute monitors the following sets of indicators in the lake for research purposes:

  • Hydrophysical (transparency, temperature regime, color)
  • Hydrochemical (mineralization, biogen elements, biochemical oxygen demand, pH value, organic compounds, oxygen regime)
  • Hydrobiological (phytoplankton, phytobenthos, periphyton, zooplankton, zoobenthos, bacterial fauna, fish and fishery)

Research results are published in scientific journals, presented at national and international conferences and in annual reports to NAS.
