The Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology (IHEI) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established in 1923, first as the Sevan fishery station, then in 1936 as the Sevan Hydrobiological Station and since 1991 as an Institute of NAS. The Institute conducts hydroecological research in the lakes, rivers and reservoirs of Armenia. There are three thematic research divisions: hydroecology, hydrobiology and ichthyology.
The scope of activities of the Center includes:
IHEI conducts research on Lake Sevan hydrobiology and the protection of natural resources, and assesses the watershed impacts on the lake.
The Institute has a multi-year databank on hydrological, hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological data on Lake Sevan and its basin rivers.
The Institute monitors the following sets of indicators in the lake for research purposes:
Research results are published in scientific journals, presented at national and international conferences and in annual reports to NAS.
